Kinesiology & Sports Taping

First developed in the 1960’s, Kinesiology is the study of muscles with the aim of balancing them to restore equilibrium and relieve pain.

During a muscle test the therapist applies pressure to a muscle or group of muscles to evaluate resistance and determine weakness or strength. It is a gentle and non-invasive method that helps to identify areas requiring further treatment.

Sports Taping

Kinesiology tape is a thin, stretchy cotton strip with an acrylic adhesive that can benefit a wide variety of musculoskeletal and sports injuries. Very similar to human skin in both thickness and elasticity, it can be worn without binding, constricting or restriction.

Its benefits are derived from the way in which it prevents abnormal or excess movement in an injured joint or structure, how it helps encourage normal positioning, and how it can prevent injury as well as protect from re-injury whilst returning to sport.

Taping can also improve co-ordination. For example if an ankle starts to twist the tape will let the body know it needs to contract muscles in that area muscles to restrict movement. This raises the individuals awareness and in turn reduces the risk of repeat damage.

Originally developed and introduced by practitioners in Japan, it was employed in the Olympics in the late 80s and is now used by athletes of all types across the world. It is valued in its ability to improve sporting performance, prevent injury and allow a quicker return to sport.
