Proprietor, Physical Therapist, Craniosacral Therapist and Spinal Manipulative Therapist
Meadbh O’Leary took over as the proprietor of Skibbereen Therapy Centre in May 2022.
She began her studies as a Physical Therapist in 2008 after a round the world trip was cut short by a neck issue. She decided that if she couldn’t find a therapist that could fix her, she would figure out the best way to do it herself! Having previously completed a degree in Electronic Engineering, she could never have imagined how much she would love working in this field and how fascinating the human body could be.
Since then, Meadbh has received qualifications in Physical Therapy, Manipulative Therapy and has also qualified as a Cranial Therapist, treating both adults and children. Additional qualifications include Dry Needling, Primal Reflex Release Technique (PRRT), as well as Visceral and Neural Manipulation qualifications from the Barral Institute. Meadbh has also achieved an advanced qualification in Stott Pilates and hopes to return to classes in the autumn after a break in group sessions since the pandemic began.
She believes that there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all treatment and that is why she is constantly updating her skills to diversify the way in which she can treat patients. Using a hands-on approach, she identifies and treats, not only the symptoms but the underlying factors that may be causing the problem. Each treatment is specifically designed to suit you and your individual problem.
Since qualifying as a physical therapist in 2010, Meadbh has worked and gained invaluable experience in some of the busiest physical therapy and osteopathic clinics in the country. In 2013, she opened her own clinic in Clonakilty. Meadbh has worked with numerous sports teams and independent athletes over the years. She has also worked at several marathons and triathlons around the county and just loves the buzz and atmosphere that surrounds these events. In 2021, she made the very difficult decision to close it when her daughter arrived into the world.
Meadbh says, “My own history of sport has led to a number of injuries over the years. This, I believe, helps me to empathise with my clients; it also allows me to share my rehabilitation experiences with them. Over the years, I have successfully learned how to manage these injuries and in doing so, ensure that I can maintain the active lifestyle that I want. There is no better feeling than when someone comes in the door in pain and walks out a while later pain-free; there is no greater job satisfaction than that!”
